Fuel (Gas) Gauge
A battery fuel gauge or battery gas gauge indicates the SoC (state-of-charge) of a lithium-ion battery pack. In other words, it can tell you how much charge remains in the battery and estimates how much longer the battery continues providing energy. Fuel gauges are often combined with LED lights and a communications protocol like SMBus to display a user-friendly read-out of SoC. The fuel (gas) gauge may also be able to monitor a pack's impedance or estimate capacity.
A fuel gauge is combined with a PCM, or more typically a BMS (battery management system) to provide additional functionality. It may be especially important in applications like electric vehicles, where letting drivers know the remaining driving distance per charge is critical. Some BMS come prebuilt with an integrated fuel (gas) gauge microcontroller.
